The Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the NFL's most iconic teams, were founded in 1933 by Art Rooney, who used his horse race winnings to start the franchise. Originally called the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team wasn't much of a contender in its early years. It wasn't until 1940 that they changed their name to the Steelers, honoring Pittsburgh's steel industry.
Despite a rough start and decades of underperformance, the Steelers' luck changed dramatically with the hiring of head coach Chuck Noll in 1969. Under Noll's leadership, the team began a new era of success that would see them become one of the most dominant franchises in NFL history, winning six Super Bowls and eight AFC championships. The Rooney family, who still own the team, watched as their fortunes turned around, transforming the Steelers from underdogs to legends of the game
